Top of mind
July CPI matched consensus Wednesday (headline +0.1% m/m, 3.4% y/y; core +0.2% m/m, 2.5% y/y, the coolest core reading since 2021), and September rate-hike odds on CME FedWatch fell hard — from roughly 48% pre-release to somewhere in the 33–36% range afterward, depending on the tracker. That should be an unambiguously bullish setup, but Cisco's after-hours reaction complicates the picture: shares fell 4–5% despite record Q4 revenue ($17.3B), an EPS beat ($1.22 vs. $1.17 consensus), and AI-order guidance raised above $9B for the year. If beat-and-raise isn't enough for Cisco, tonight's Applied Materials report — the next AI-capex bellwether — is a real test of whether that pattern holds. PPI lands at 8:30am ET as the CPI read's last word before markets can fully exhale.

Read-through: This is a market that got the inflation data it wanted and rallied on it, but the Cisco reaction shows valuation and "what's already priced in" now matter as much as the headline beat — especially in anything AI-capex-adjacent. Oil cracking after six straight up days removes one inflation-risk tailwind just as the Fed narrative turns more dovish.
Headlines & analysis
1. July CPI matches forecasts; September hike odds tumble
Source: CNBC, Motley Fool, Forbes, Barchart So what: Headline CPI rose 0.1% m/m (3.4% y/y) and core CPI rose 0.2% m/m (2.5% y/y, the softest annual core print since March 2021), both in line with Dow Jones consensus. Combined with last week's weak July jobs report, CME FedWatch showed September hike probability falling from around 48% pre-release into the mid-30s%, with hold-rate odds climbing toward 60–67% depending on the tracker. Directionally consistent across sources even where the exact percentage varies.
2. Cisco beats on every headline number, stock falls anyway
Source: SiliconANGLE, Investing.com, Blockonomi, TipRanks So what: Cisco posted record Q4 revenue of $17.3B (+18% y/y) and adjusted EPS of $1.22 versus $1.17 consensus, with Q4 AI-infrastructure orders of $4B pushing the full-year AI order tally to $9.3B — above the raised $9B guide. Shares still fell roughly 4–5% after hours. Cisco trades around a 25x forward P/E (versus a ~40x trailing multiple), suggesting the market had already priced in the beat and is now parsing forward commentary and valuation rather than rewarding the headline print.
3. Applied Materials reports tonight — the next AI-capex bellwether
Source: Barchart, TradingKey, Yahoo Finance So what: AMAT reports fiscal Q3 results after today's close (call at 4:30pm ET), with consensus at roughly $3.39 EPS on ~$9B revenue, against company guidance of $3.36 EPS ±$0.20 and $8.95B revenue ±$500M. As a semiconductor-equipment name, it's a read on whether AI-infrastructure capex is actually showing up in equipment orders — and after Cisco's beat-but-sell-off, whether "in line or better" is even enough to move a stock that's already pulled back roughly 25%+ from its 2026 high on China-export-restriction overhang.
4. Oil's six-day Hormuz rally finally cracks
Source: Bloomberg, Trading Economics So what: Brent slipped toward $88/bbl and WTI below $83/bbl Thursday, each down roughly 1.2–1.4%, snapping a six-session advance built on the stalled Strait of Hormuz standoff. Trump's claim of "total control" over the waterway and ongoing Iran-US friction mean the rally could resume on any fresh escalation — this looks like profit-taking into a still-unresolved standoff, not a resolution.
5. Wendy's jumps 15% on report Trian is preparing a take-private bid
Source: Forbes, Motley Fool, Reuters (via wire) So what: Wendy's shares surged as much as 15% Wednesday (closing near $8.66) after reports that Nelson Peltz's Trian Fund Management — which holds roughly 8% of the company, with Peltz personally holding about 16% — is assembling a consortium with BlueFive Capital and franchisee Flynn Group to take the burger chain private. No price has been set, and this is the second time in three months this idea has resurfaced; Wendy's said it would review any formal proposal under its fiduciary duties.
Ideas — long-term core
Quality businesses, durable competitive advantages, reasonable valuation. Hold horizon: years.
CSCO — Cisco Systems
- Thesis: A rare case where a legacy networking incumbent is compounding AI-order growth (full-year AI orders raised above $9B, up from a $5B initial target) on top of a record, cash-generative core business — a lower-beta way to own enterprise AI-infrastructure spend than pure-play data-center names.
- Valuation note: Forward P/E around 25x, roughly in line with the hardware-industry median (~23x) — not cheap, but not the stretched multiple its ~40x trailing P/E might suggest, since that gap reflects expected earnings growth.
- Why now (or why patient): The after-hours sell-off despite a genuine beat-and-raise is the kind of disconnect worth watching rather than chasing — if the stock stabilizes over the next few sessions near current levels, it's a reasonable entry into a name that just proved out its AI-order thesis; if it keeps sliding, wait for a clearer valuation reset.
- Risks / bear case: If AI-infrastructure order growth decelerates from its recent pace, or the enterprise-networking business outside AI stays sluggish, the stock has no beat-and-raise catalyst left to lean on for several quarters.
Ideas — opportunistic
Catalyst-driven, time-bound, sized smaller. Hold horizon: days to months. Define exit before entry.
AMAT — Applied Materials, pre-earnings event
- Catalyst: Fiscal Q3 results tonight after the close (call at 4:30pm ET), consensus ~$3.39 EPS / ~$9B revenue against company guidance of $3.36 EPS / $8.95B revenue. Watch whether wafer-fab-equipment orders confirm or complicate the AI-capex strength CoreWeave, Super Micro, and Cisco have all pointed to this week.
- Time horizon: Overnight through tomorrow's open — a single-session binary event.
- What would invalidate: A beat that doesn't move the stock (echoing Cisco's reaction) would signal the market has stopped rewarding AI-capex beats altogether; a miss or cautious China commentary would be a more direct negative given AMAT's existing export-restriction overhang (~$600M revenue headwind already guided for fiscal 2026).
- Risk note: AMAT already trades at an elevated multiple (mid-40s to mid-50s P/E depending on the measure) after a sharp pullback from its 2026 high — this is a volatile, defined-risk trade, not a valuation-support setup.
WEN — Wendy's, M&A-driven trade
- Catalyst: Reports that Trian Fund Management (with BlueFive Capital and Flynn Group) is preparing a take-private bid, no price disclosed yet. A formal offer, a leaked price, or a company statement confirming/denying talks would each move the stock independently of any operating news.
- Time horizon: Days to a few weeks, until a formal bid materializes or the story fades (as it did three months ago).
- What would invalidate: A company statement definitively rejecting a deal, or reporting suggesting the consortium has walked away, would remove the takeout premium currently in the stock.
- Risk note: This is speculation on unconfirmed deal talks with no price attached — a classic case where the stock can give back double-digit gains just as fast if the report doesn't turn into a real offer. Small size only.
Portfolio-level guidance
Allocation and risk observations. Not specific buy/sell calls — those depend on a full picture this report doesn't see.
- Concentration check: Cisco's beat-but-sink and AMAT's looming print are a reminder that "AI capex is intact" as a thesis is being re-priced stock by stock now, not accepted wholesale — portfolios overweight the theme should expect dispersion, not uniform re-rating, even as the underlying data stays strong.
- Rates positioning: The 10-year easing to ~4.68% on falling hike odds is a tailwind for duration and rate-sensitive equities, but PPI at 8:30am today is a live risk to that read before the week is out.
- Cash & dry powder: PPI this morning, AMAT tonight, and retail sales tomorrow stack three more catalysts into 24 hours — a reasonable stretch to hold some dry powder rather than deploy fully into any single print.
- Risk regime read: VIX at 15.28 and a market that rallied cleanly on in-line CPI both point to a still-calm risk regime, even with an unresolved oil-supply standoff and a Fed decision six weeks out — worth noting that low realized volatility can persist right up until one of these catalysts surprises.
Watch list — tomorrow / this week
Earnings: Applied Materials reports today, August 13, after the close (call at 4:30pm ET); consensus ~$3.39 EPS / ~$9B revenue.
Economic data: July PPI releases today, August 13, at 8:30am ET. Retail sales for July release Friday, August 14, at 8:30am ET (consensus: headline +0.3% m/m, ex-auto +0.2% m/m). Preliminary University of Michigan consumer sentiment also lands Friday (consensus ~54.1, down from 55.2).
Fed / central bank: No major scheduled speakers today. FOMC minutes from the July 28–29 meeting release August 19 — watch for how dissenters who favored a hike react to this week's cooler CPI and jobs data.
Other: Strait of Hormuz negotiations remain unresolved despite oil's Thursday pullback; any fresh escalation or breakthrough could move crude and yields independent of the domestic data calendar. Wendy's take-private story is unresolved — watch for a formal Trian proposal or company statement.
