Nasdaq jumps 1% into earnings, then IBM whipsaws after hours

The Nasdaq led a three-index gain on Wednesday as AI-linked names rallied into Tesla and IBM prints. The variant view: after-hours reversals show how little room there is for anything short of perfect guidance.

Top of mind

Stocks rose on Wednesday, October 21, with the Nasdaq Composite up about 1.05%, the S&P 500 up 0.58% and the Dow up 0.69%, a reversal from Tuesday's flat Nasdaq as AI-linked names caught a bid ahead of earnings. The after-hours tape was less friendly: IBM swung from a large gain to a loss mid-call, and Tesla's early gains faded. The question for a long-term plus opportunistic investor is whether the market is now paying only for flawless guidance.

Market snapshot

Closing data is for Wednesday, October 21; this report was prepared before Thursday's open. The index levels tie out to Tuesday's closes (S&P 7,712.57, Nasdaq 26,424.82, Dow 52,495.88) and the direction matches a CNBC headline describing a Nasdaq gain of about 1%. Exact figures can differ slightly by outlet.

Asset Level Change Notes
S&P 500 7,757.17 +0.58% Third straight gain, still below the Oct 6 record close of 7,818.93
Nasdaq Composite 26,702.86 +1.05% Tech and AI-linked names led
Dow Jones 52,856.09 +0.69% (+360.21 pts) IBM closed up about 3.9% before reporting

10-year yield, VIX, oil and sector leaders/laggards are omitted: I could not find confirmed readings dated October 21, and stale figures would be worse than none.

Read-through: Risk appetite improved and led by growth, which is the opposite of Tuesday's rotation into cyclicals. The rally came before the key earnings were out, so the after-hours reactions matter more than the closing prints.

Headlines & analysis

1. IBM beats, then the stock reverses during the call

Source: Motley Fool and Yahoo Finance coverage, Oct 21-22 So what: Revenue of about $17.1 billion topped the roughly $16.9 billion consensus, and shares jumped about 7% after hours before sliding to a loss near 4.6% as the call progressed. A beat that cannot hold a gain suggests investors were listening for guidance and AI-demand commentary, not the quarter itself.

2. Tesla beats with positive free cash flow; reaction is mixed

Source: Yahoo Finance, Oct 21 So what: Adjusted EPS of $0.48 on about $28.05 billion in revenue, with better-than-expected capex and positive free cash flow. Reports differ on the extended-hours move (flat-to-slightly-up versus down about 2%), and some commentary flagged cooler data-center spending plans as a worry for AI-supply-chain investors. Treat the first-hour reaction as unsettled.

3. AT&T falls almost 6% despite a beat

Source: Investor's Business Daily, via secondary coverage, Oct 21 So what: Earnings and revenue topped consensus, but subscriber growth looked underwhelming. Defensive, income-oriented names are not immune when the growth metric disappoints.

4. SpaceX and Meta keep the AI-capex debate front and center

Source: CNBC market coverage, Oct 20-21 So what: SpaceX shares rallied after Tuesday's results, and Meta Platforms was among the names listed as big after-hours movers on Wednesday. I could not confirm the size or direction of Meta's move, so I am not drawing a conclusion from it.

Ideas — long-term core

Quality businesses, durable competitive advantages, reasonable valuation. Hold horizon: years.

No new long-term setup stands out from today's reporting. After a three-day index winning streak and before the post-earnings dust settles, patience is the better call than forcing a name.

Ideas — opportunistic

Catalyst-driven, time-bound, sized smaller. Hold horizon: days to months. Define exit before entry.

IBM — Post-earnings reversal

  • Catalyst: A revenue beat followed by a large after-hours swing from gain to loss; Thursday's open and analyst estimate changes set the tone.
  • Time horizon: Days to a few weeks.
  • What would invalidate: Analysts broadly raising targets and the stock reclaiming Wednesday's close, or conversely a clean break below the after-hours low.
  • Risk note: Intraday reversals on calls can extend either way; size small and define the exit first. A watch item, not a call.

T — Guidance-light selloff

  • Catalyst: A near 6% drop despite a beat, driven by subscriber growth.
  • Time horizon: Through the next sessions as estimates reset.
  • What would invalidate: Further subscriber-growth weakness, or evidence the drop was a one-off positioning unwind.
  • Risk note: Valuation and dividend questions need checking in the filing; a one-day move is not a thesis.

Portfolio-level guidance

Allocation and risk observations. Not specific buy/sell calls — those depend on a full picture this report doesn't see.

  • Concentration check: A 1% Nasdaq day followed by sharp after-hours reversals is a reminder of how much of index performance depends on a few AI-linked earnings reactions.
  • Rates positioning: I could not confirm Wednesday's yield levels; the 10-year was recently reported around 5%, so keep duration matched to your horizon rather than to daily headlines.
  • Cash & dry powder: Three straight index gains argue for staged rather than lump-sum additions.
  • Risk regime read: Improving, but the index is still below its Oct 6 record and the reaction function to earnings is unforgiving.

Watch list — tomorrow / this week

Earnings: Reactions to Meta, Tesla, IBM and Lam Research results at Thursday's open; confirm other reporters with company calendars. Economic data: No specific releases or consensus figures were confirmed in today's research; check the official calendar. Fed / central bank: No fresh Fed communication found. Other: Oil and Middle East headlines, and any further stress in leveraged AI-infrastructure names.

Risks to the call: The obvious risk is that Thursday's open gives back Wednesday's gains if after-hours weakness spreads. The less obvious one is that the rally leaned on pre-earnings positioning, so even decent prints can read as sell-the-news. Source note: index closes come from a single aggregated recap checked for arithmetic consistency with Tuesday's closes and a CNBC headline; yields, VIX and Meta's move were not confirmed.
