Top of mind
Stocks rallied hard on Wednesday, November 4, after Democrats won control of Congress: the Dow gained about 3% to 53,356, its best day since April 2025, and WTI crude fell more than 8% to $88.12. The leadership was uneven, though. AI infrastructure names lagged, so the market looks to be rotating rather than simply risk-on. Thursday's futures were mixed, with Nasdaq-100 futures weaker than the Dow's.
Market snapshot
Wednesday, November 4 close (most recent complete session; this post was prepared before Thursday's open).
| Asset | Level | Change | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | about 7,689 | +1.6% | CBS reported the level; CNN put the gain at 1.58% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 25,736.51 | +1.44% | Trailed the Dow as AI-linked names lagged |
| Dow Jones | 53,356.12 | +3.03% | Gain of 1,569 points, per CNBC; best day since April 2025 |
| WTI crude | $88.12 | about -8% | Settle, per reporting on Wednesday's session |
The 10-year yield and VIX are omitted: I could not find dated readings for Wednesday. Sector leaders and laggards are omitted for the same reason.
Read-through: Relief over a decisive election result and cheaper oil lifted cyclicals and the Dow, while CNN reported Nvidia down about 3% and an ETF tracking AI infrastructure down about 9%. That split matters more than the headline index gain. Index levels come from different outlets, so treat the S&P figure as approximate.
Headlines & analysis
1. Democrats take Congress, and the market reads it as lower political risk
Source: CNBC, CBS News, CNN So what: Investors appeared relieved by the clear outcome and by the president's acceptance of it. Analysts quoted by CBS expect gridlock to limit big tax and spending packages, which the market seems to welcome. Gridlock also raises the chance of oversight of AI and large tech, which may explain some of the AI-name weakness.
2. Oil drops more than 8%
Source: CNBC live coverage So what: WTI settled at $88.12. Lower energy costs help consumers and transports, but oil is still high in absolute terms and one report flagged possible renewed U.S. combat operations in Iran as a risk that could reverse the move.
3. AI chips and infrastructure diverge from the rally
Source: CNN So what: Nvidia fell about 3% and an AI infrastructure ETF about 9% on a day the Dow soared. After last week's Alphabet, Amazon and Intel selloffs, this suggests the AI-capex repricing is continuing even as the broader market recovers.
4. AMD and solar stocks jump
Source: Market-session recaps (AMD +6.2%, First Solar +8.1%) So what: AMD rose after forecasting faster-than-expected 2027 growth. I could not confirm the details of its guidance from a primary source, so treat that as unverified. First Solar's gain fits a theme of money moving toward energy and policy-sensitive names after the election.
Ideas — long-term core
Quality businesses, durable competitive advantages, reasonable valuation. Hold horizon: years.
No new idea today. A one-day 3% Dow move driven by a political event is not a valuation case, and I could not confirm current multiples for the names moving. The patient work is deciding whether the AI-infrastructure drawdown is changing any long-term thesis or only the price. Bear case for buying into the dip: AI capex returns stay unproven and regulatory scrutiny rises under a divided government.
Ideas — opportunistic
Catalyst-driven, time-bound, sized smaller. Hold horizon: days to months. Define exit before entry.
Nothing qualifies. Chasing a post-election rally after a 3% day has no verified entry or invalidation level. If you watch AMD after its reported guidance, the thesis would be invalidated by evidence that the 2027 growth forecast does not hold up in the filing or call. Risk note: stocks that gap on guidance often retrace, and AI names have been moving 5% to 10% in a day.
Portfolio-level guidance
Allocation and risk observations. Not specific buy/sell calls — those depend on a full picture this report doesn't see.
- Concentration check: Wednesday showed AI infrastructure and the broad market moving in opposite directions. Portfolios concentrated in AI names did not share in the rally.
- Rates positioning: I do not have a verified yield reading, so no view on duration today.
- Cash & dry powder: A sharp one-day rally is a reasonable moment to review whether planned buys are sized by plan, not by momentum.
- Risk regime read: Mixed. Political risk eased, but oil, Iran headlines and the AI-capex debate are all live. Friday's jobs report is the next hard data point.
Watch list — tomorrow / this week
Earnings: Continued reports from AI-linked names; check company IR pages for dates. Economic data: October jobs report due Friday, November 6; economists were expecting roughly 60,000 jobs after September's weak 29,000, per Reuters' week-ahead. Fed / central bank: No verified speaker schedule found. Other: Oil and Iran headlines; early signals on how a divided Congress approaches AI and tech regulation.
