Anthropic's IPO filing lifts chips while Meta's equity raise adds dilution worries

Stocks rebounded Monday as an Anthropic IPO filing revived the AI trade, but Meta's plan to raise up to $95 billion in equity shows who is being asked to fund it. The variant view: the rally is relief, not resolution, heading into Wednesday's Fed decision.

Top of mind

The S&P 500 rose 0.70% and the Nasdaq Composite 0.82% on Monday, October 26, as Anthropic's IPO filing revived the AI trade and chip stocks bounced about 2.8%. The same day, Meta said it plans to raise up to $95 billion in equity for AI infrastructure and its shares fell about 1.9%. For a long-term plus opportunistic investor, the takeaway is that the AI-capex funding question is still open, and the Fed decision on Wednesday is the next test.

Market snapshot

Closing data is for Monday, October 26; this report was prepared before Tuesday's open. Direction and size of the index moves were consistent across multiple recaps (TheStreet, CNBC and others); the Dow's point change reconciles with the prior Friday close.

Asset Level Change Notes
S&P 500 7,676.77 +0.70% Still below its Wednesday October 21 close of 7,757.17
Nasdaq Composite 26,169.38 +0.82% Recovered part of Thursday's 2.6% drop
Dow Jones 52,361.58 +0.28% (+146 pts) Lagged tech on the day
10Y Treasury about 5.0% roughly flat Sources differ: one says slightly below 5%, one says up slightly; TheStreet's table shows 4.984%
2Y Treasury 4.71% from 4.69% Single source
Philadelphia Semiconductor Index n/a about +2.8% Still down about 12% for the month per one recap

VIX, oil levels and sector leaders/laggards are omitted: I could not confirm dated readings for Monday.

Read-through: A relief bounce led by the most beaten-down part of the market. Breadth on the NYSE was reported as broad, but Nasdaq new lows still outnumbered new highs, which says the rebound has not repaired the damage underneath. Rates near 5% are still the ceiling on valuations.

Headlines & analysis

1. Anthropic files for an IPO

Source: CNBC, TheStreet, BigGo Finance, KuCoin recaps So what: The prospectus reportedly points to a Nasdaq listing under the ticker "ANT," about $16.3 billion in first-half revenue and a net loss of roughly $80.7 billion that the filing attributes mainly to non-cash fair-value changes. Price and size were not disclosed. A large public AI lab gives investors a direct way to price AI economics, and the filing lifted the chip and AI supply chain on Monday. Note that this is a filing, not a listing, and the numbers come from secondary coverage.

2. Meta plans an equity raise of up to $95 billion

Source: Techflow, TradingKey, other recaps So what: The proceeds are earmarked for data centers and AI infrastructure. Shares slipped about 1.9% on dilution and return-on-spend concerns, following a roughly 7% drop on Thursday. One outlet printed "$950 billion" in a headline, but its own body text and other outlets give $95 billion, which is the figure used here.

3. Fed meets Wednesday with a hold priced in

Source: Fed funds futures as cited in market recaps So what: Futures reportedly put about a 90% probability on the Fed holding at its current 3.75%-4% range. With the 10-year near 5% and the 2-year at 4.71%, the market is more likely to react to the press conference tone than to the decision itself.

4. Oil pulled back

Source: TheStreet, HDFC Sky recaps So what: Recaps cite falling oil as a supportive factor after last week's energy-driven jump. I could not confirm the size of the move, so treat it as direction only.

Ideas — long-term core

Quality businesses, durable competitive advantages, reasonable valuation. Hold horizon: years.

No new long-term setup stands out. A one-day rebound does not answer whether AI capex earns its cost of capital, and Meta's equity raise adds a reason to wait for clearer funding and return data. Keeping a watch list is the better answer today.

Ideas — opportunistic

Catalyst-driven, time-bound, sized smaller. Hold horizon: days to months. Define exit before entry.

No setup qualifies today. A 2.8% chip bounce on an IPO headline, a Fed decision in two days and Big Tech earnings after it make this a poor moment to chase. If you study the AI complex around the event window, define the invalidation level before looking at the price.

Portfolio-level guidance

Allocation and risk observations. Not specific buy/sell calls — those depend on a full picture this report doesn't see.

  • Concentration check: Index returns this month are dominated by a handful of AI-linked names. Check how much of your equity exposure is really one theme.
  • Rates positioning: A 10-year near 5% into a Fed meeting means bond prices can move on tone alone. Know your duration before Wednesday.
  • Cash & dry powder: Event risk is stacked (Fed, mega-cap earnings, PCE). Having cash lets you wait for the results instead of reacting to the headlines.
  • Risk regime read: Relief rally inside a weak month: semis still down about 12% on the month and new lows outnumbering new highs on the Nasdaq. I could not verify VIX to cross-check this.

Watch list — tomorrow / this week

Earnings: Per one preview (InvestingLive), Microsoft and Alphabet report after the close on Wednesday, October 28, and Amazon after the close on Thursday, October 29. I did not confirm Apple's date; check company IR pages. Economic data: September PCE is reportedly due Thursday, October 29 before the open (single source). I did not confirm the GDP date; check the BEA calendar. Fed / central bank: FOMC decision and press conference Wednesday, October 28; markets price a hold. Other: Further detail on the Anthropic S-1 and Meta's offering structure; whether oil keeps falling.

Risks to the call: Figures come from secondary recaps rather than a primary data feed and several (10-year close, 2-year yield, chip index, Anthropic financials) are single-source or differ by outlet. A fast reversal in AI sentiment, the obvious risk, is joined by a less obvious one: a large wave of new AI equity supply (Meta's raise, Anthropic's offering) could weigh on the whole theme even if demand stays strong.
